Uma Thurman was born Uma Karuna Thurman on the 29th of April, 1970, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Her mother was a model and her father was the first western person to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk. They spent a lot of time in Almora, India, and often the Dalai Lama would visit. Due to a lot of teasing when she was younger, Thurman developed body dysmorphic disorder. She left high school to pursue acting in New York City. She began working as a model, and in 1989 she appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone. She appeared in four films the previous year, including Johnny Be Good and Kiss Daddy Goodnight. Her first notable (and topless) role was in Dangerous Liaisons with Glenn Close and Michelle Pfeiffer. She fled to London for a year after feeling awkward about the attention. She gained a Worst Actress Razzie for her first lead role in Even Cowgirl’s Get the Blues. She was then nominated for an Oscar for her standout role in Pulp Fiction in 1994. She then went on to appear in The Truth About Cats & Dogs, Gattaca, Batman & Robin, The Avengers, and Les Miserables. She received two more Razzie nominations. She then won a Golden Globe for Hysterical Blindness. She took a five year break, and then in 2003 did Paycheck. It was after this that she participated in Kill Bill. Suddenly she had become one of Hollywood’s highest paid actresses at $12.5 million per film. She then did Be Cool, Prime, The Producers, and My Super Ex-Girlfriend.
