Toni Braxton was born Toni Michelle Braxton on the 7th of October, 1967, in Severn, Maryland, USA. Braxton was raised in a strict religious family, and sang in the church choir when she was younger. In the late 1980s, Braxton and her four sisters – Traci, Trina, Towanda, and Tamar – joined together as The Braxtons. They signed to Arista Records in 1989. Braxton was then signed as a solo artist to LaFace Records. In 1993, she released her self entitled debut solo album. It went to number one on the US charts. She won three Grammy Awards, and two American Music Awards. 1996 saw the release for her second album Secrets. She won a further two Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards. In 1998, Braxton filed for bankruptcy for a $3.9 million debt. Her belongings… including every award she had won, were sold off to pay her creditors. In 2000, she released her third album, named The Heat. For her fourth album release, Braxton was confined to bed rest with her second pregnancy, and was unable to promote the album. More than a Woman was released in 2002 and it was a disappointment. She has since released two more albums and there is apparently another on the way.
