Susan Sarandon was born Susan Abigail Tomalin on the 4th of October, 1946, in New York City, New York, USA. Her father was an advertising executive and television producer. Susan is of English, Irish, Welsh, and Sicilian/Italian origins. Susan has claimed that her grandmother, Anita Regali, was connected to the mafia. Whilst in college in 1967, Susan met and married Chris Sarandon. They divorced in 1979 but Susan retained her name as her stage name. In 1969, Susan went to a casting call with her husband. He did not get a part, but she landed a major role in the film Joe. It was five years until she continued her success with The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In 1981, Susan was nominated for an Oscar for Atlantic City. In 1983, Susan gained further cult status for a lesbian love scene with Catherine Denevue in The Hunger. Her big break, however, came in 1988 in Bull Durham. After gaining four more Oscar nominations, she won in 1996 for Dead Man Walking. In the mid 1980s, Susan was linked with director Franco Amurri, and they had a daughter together in 1985. Since 1988, Susan has been involved with Tim Robbins, whom she has two children with. Both Susan and Robbins are actively involved in liberal social causes, gaining much controversy, not the least of which she campaigned for Jack Henry Abbott’s release from prison. Abbott was a career criminal (including murder) who showed promise as a writer. Susan campaigned that he should be released due to his contributions to society, and he was released in 1981. Six weeks later, Abbott murdered again. In 1989, she and Robbins named their son Jack Henry.
