Sigourney Weaver was born Susan Alexandra Weaver on the 8th of October, 1949, in New York City, New York, USA. She is a well respected American actress. Her father was television executive Pat Weaver, and her mother was a former British actress. Sigourney chose her name when she was fourteen, after reading The Great Gatsby. She studied law at Yale Law School, and then drama at University of Sunderland. She appeared in original plays by fellow university friend Christopher Durang. In 1981 she appeared in his off-Broadway production of Beyond Therapy. Sigourney has played some notable roles in her career, but she is probably best known for her role of Ellen Ripley in the Alien movies. It was in 1979 that she first appeared in Alien. There have since been three sequels – Aliens, Alien3, and Alien: Resurrection. Ellen Ripley was the first female action hero. With appearances in such films as Gorillas in the Mist, The Ice Storm, Ghostbusters, and Copycat, Sigourney was the highest paid actress of the 1990s. Sigourney married director Jim Simpson in 1984, and they had one daughter together in 1980. Sigourney inspired the Italian lesbian sci-fi comic character Legs Weaver.
