Rachael Stirling was born on the 30th May 1977 in London, England. She is a stage, film and television actress best known for her performance as Nancy Astley in the BBC drama Tipping the Velvet. She is the daughter of actress Dame Diana Rigg and Archie Stirling. After graduating from Edinburgh University with a BA in History of Art, she began her acting career though for some time she was undecided, she is a highly accomplished equestrian rider. She also speaks Russian fluently. She made her first major appearance on stage in 1996 as Desdemona in the National Youth Theatre revival of Othello. Her first screen appearance was in the 1998 British comedy film Still Crazy. Her first TV break was in 2000 when she played the young Rebeccah in the American made-for-television movie In the Beginning. She continues to be very active in the theatre, much more so than on television or flim, covering a diversity of roles in plays such as Dusty Hughes' Helpless, A Woman of No Importance Anna in the Tropics and Tamburlaine. In 2005 she followed in her mother's footsteps, bringing an alluring erotic charge to her performance as Miranda Lionheart in the National Theatre stage version of Theatre of Blood in 2005.
