Phoebe Cates was born in New York, New York on July 16, 1963. She attended the Professional Children?s School while growing up and the Juilliard School, too. Her first movie role was in Paradise in 1982. That same year, she appeared in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the teen movie that would launch her career, as it did many others. Her next project was a made-for-television movie, Baby Sister in 1983. That year, she also had a part in the film Private School. The following year, in 1984, Cates again appeared in two movies, Lace and Gremlins, the latter skyrocketing her career. During the remainder of the eighties, the young actress took on roles in Date with an Angel, Shag and Bright Lights, Big City, among others. The nineties got off to a great start, with three movies in 1990, Largo Desolato, I Love You to Death, and Gremlins Two: The New Batch. She did Drop Dead Fred and then Princess Cariboo in 1994, her last film until The Anniversary Party in 2001. After that, she left acting to focus on her family and has not acted since. In 2005, the ex-actress opened a boutique on Madison Avenue called Blue Tree.
