Penelope Cruz started her interest in acting at a very young age. Born in Madrid, Spain on April 28, 1974, she began to copy television commercials as a toddler. However, instead of studying to be an actress, the girl chose dance and worked hard at ballet for nine years at Spain?s National Conservatory. At the age of fifteen, she auditioned for a talent agency and which she won and was given a contract that led to her acting in several Spanish-language television productions. Her first movie was The Greek Labyrinth, and from there, Penelope went on to act in La Ribelle (The Rebel), Todo es Mentira (All is Lies), El Effecto Mariposa (The Butterfly Effect, not to be confused with the Hollywood movie of the same name), and El Amor Prejudica Seriamente la Salud (Love Can Seriously Damage Your Health). In 1998, she was cast in her first English-language movie, Don Juan and The Man with Rain in His Shoes. She later appeared in Hi-Lo Country and then in 2000, she was cast in Woman On Top. As her fame grew, Cruz took on roles in Blow, All the Pretty Horses, Vanilla Sky, and Masked and Anonymous. She has also appeared in Gothika, Sahara, Bandidas and The Good Night.
