Paulina Porizkova was born April 9, 1965 in Prostejov in what is now the Czech Republic. While still a toddler, she was left behind with her greatgrandmother when her parents fled the country for Sweden, in 1968, in an attempt to escape the Soviet invasion. They thought it would be a simple matter to send for their daughter later on, but Czechoslovak authorities refused to allow the child to leave and a huge, international custody battle began, making Paulina famous before she was old enough to remember. The battle raged for seven years and resulted in her mother being arrested during a rescue attempt. Finally, when Paulina was ten, she was allowed to rejoin her parents, but the reunion was cut short when her father abandoned the family, leaving Paulina and her brother to steal in order to get enough food to eat, while their mother tried to study medicine. Due to her unhappy adolescent years, Paulina was more than happy to take John Casablanca?s offer of a ticket to Paris after a friend sent her photo to him. She quickly became a top Paris model and later posed in the Swimsuit Edition of Sports Illustrated, then Playboy. She also appeared in Arizona Dream, and wrote and directed Roommates in 2001.
