She competed in beauty competitions during her high school years to save money up for college. Eventually, she would attend Metropolitan State College. She wouldn’t be discovered for another four years, when Roger Corman cast her in his film, The Big Doll House, a women’s prison movie. He later cast her in another prison flick, The Big Bird Cage, in 1972. Her next role was in Coffy, a stereotypical blaxploitation film, which became her bread and butter for a while in the seventies. After the blaxploitation movies went out of style, she didn’t work until 1981, with Apache in the Bronx and then Something Wicked This Way Comes in 1983. She also made guest appearances on television shows during this time, including the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Miami Vice. Her more recent projects include The L Word and Back in the Day.
