Norah Jones was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 30, 1979. Her birth name was Geethali Norah Jones Shankar, thanks to her Indian father, Ravi Shankar. But she changed her name officially to Norah Jones when she was 16. Though she is now famous for her silky vocals, Jones only ever studied by singing in a choir as a child. She took acting lessons in high school as well. In high school, she won the Downbeat Student Music Award for Best Jazz Vocalist, not once, but twice. She studied Jazz piano at the university of North Texas, but dropped out after two years to head for New York where she worked as a lounge singer and played for other bands. She has also appeared in Marian McPartland?s Piano Jazz, at the Tanglewood Jazz Festival and at the New Orleans Jazz Festival two years running, 2004 and 2005. In 2002, her first album, Come Away with Me, came out and went straight to number one on the U.S. Billboard. Her second album, Feels Like Home, was released in 2004 and was the best selling album of all time for Blue Notes Records. Jones was featured in Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2007, her third album was brought out, Not Too Late. She has also done several tours to promote her albums.
