Mira Sorvino was born on the 28th September 1967 in Tenafly, New Jersey, USA. She is an Academy Award and Golden Globe winning actress. After graduating form Harvard with a degree in East Asia Studies (she pent a year in China and speaks Mandarin fluently) she spent the next three years in New York City, trying to make a name for herself as an actress. When the 1993 film Amongst Friends entered pre-production, she was offered the job of third assistant director, not what she wanted but she needed the work so she took it. Soon she was promoted to casting director, then to assistant producer, and when the lead actress pulled out just as shooting was due to start she was offered the role, as she said, "they were desperate and I was there and available". Her role in the film played to positive reviews and this opened doors for her. After small but showy roles in Quiz Show and Barcelona, her portrayal of a squeaky-voiced, foul-mouthed prostitute in Mighty Aphrodite won her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Other credits include Romy and Michele's High School Reunion and At First Sight. In recent years, she has appeared in lower budget and independent films, the most notable Human Trafficking in 2005.
