Melanie Brown was born May 29th, 1975 in Leeds, West Yorkshire. She is professionally known as either Mel B, or Scary Spice of the Spice Girls. Mel B studied performing arts at the Intake School, worked as a dancer in the well known resort Blackpool, Lancashire, and then joined a band originally called Touch, later reworked to become the all girl pop phenoms. The Spice Girls conquered the planet selling over 50 million records worldwide with 3 albums, and 10 singles before their retirement in 2001. Their slogan of Girl Power, high energy shows with infectious and instantly recognizable songs, and 5 very different females running the full range of womanhood from Baby, to a clothes horse (Posh) to a strong, in-your-face gal who can take care of herself (Scary), made them a phenomenon for everyone—after all, the boys were amused too. The Spice Girls were a participatory group with heavy merchandizing and a clever way for girls to see with which ones they really identified themselves. Before the group went their separate ways, Mel B had her own hit with Missy Elliott, a song called I Want You Back. Since then she released solo album Hot, an autobiography Catch a Fire, hosted British television and appeared on a sitcom, performed in theatre and film, and most recently appeared on the American version of Dancing With the Stars. Mel B has 2 girls, is currently married to Stephen Belafonte and is in rehearsal for the return of the Spice Girls since they announced a highly anticipated reunion and world tour.
