Mariah Carey was born March 27th, 1970 in Huntington, New York. The singer songwriter was the first recording artist in history to have her first 5 singles reach number one on the U.S. Billboard chart. She was the most successful artist in the 1990s according to Billboard magazine, and she is second only to Aretha Franklin in Grammy award nominations, of which she has received 33 and (to Arethas 38) and won 5. Carey was Columbia Records best selling artist when she married executive Tommy Mottola who Carey and industry insiders watched promote, steer, and try to control her career. Eventually, Carey broke free and chronicled her escape in numerous interviews and not-so-subtle videos showing her fleeing from a well guarded mansion or running away in her actual wedding gown (although she claimed that was not as obvious a slight as it appeared). Careys 5-8 octave range vocal stylings are heavenly to many, oversung and more impressive than emotionally evocative to her critics. But her comeback after leaving Columbia, being dropped by Virgin Records, suffering a public mental breakdown when her role in the loosely autobiographical movie Glitter became a laughingstock, only to return to top the charts in 2005 with Island Records has been an awe-inspiring triumph to witness.
