Madchen Amick was born December 12th, 1970 in Reno, Nevada. The uniqueness of her first name is one of her most commented upon characteristics. The name is pronounced MAY-chen and shes told interviewers it was given to her so she could be unique, a quality her parents valued highly and encouraged with frequent painting and dance lessons where she could explore her artsy bents. The name was explained to Madchen to mean Pretty Maiden in German, but at least one German man told her its since come to be slang for Chick. Her most notable appearance in the world of pop culture came on the cult hit David Lynchs Twin Peaks (1990-1991), in which she played waitress Shelly Johnson who was horribly abused by her husband. Amick was nominated for a Soap Opera Digest Award for Best Supporting Actress in Primetime in the part. Afterward, she admitted a lot of Victim scripts starting coming her way, but she dismissed the fact as something that nearly every other actress can probably say as well. Her next acclaim came from co-starring across James Spader in Dream Lover (1994) for which she was nominated for a Saturn Award. Since then, Amick has mostly appeared in episodic t.v. Shes married to musician David Alexis and the couple have two children.
