Lucy Liu was born December 2nd, 1968 in Queens, New York. The Asian American actress is the daughter of two immigrants from Taiwan, and her first language is actually Mandarin. She even boasts a Bachelor of Science (in this case, specialized liberal arts degree) in Asian Languages and Cultures from the University of Michigan. Liu has a knack for taking roles that could have become stereotypical in their portrayal of Asian women and turning them into feisty, hysterically funny, sexy yet scary, or somehow otherwise compelling characters. Her first credited appearances were single episodes starting with Beverly Hills 90210 (1991) and later L.A. Law (1993), until working her way up to a 3 episode stint on ER as Mei-Sun Leow. By far, her breakthrough role was as Ling Woo on Ally McBeal. She began as a client suing for a perceived plastic surgery mishap, and was so hilariously bitchy that David E Kelley continued writing her into the show, eventually as a member of the law firm who proclaimed: I’m rich, I only come to work to wear my outfits. She won one SAG award and was nominated for two other SAG awards, an Image Award, and an Emmy for this role. Perhaps more importantly, it started Lius A-List career which includes a starring role in the Charlies Angels movies, and roles in Chicago (2002) and an especially memorable role in Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003). Lui is currently producing a Charlie Chan film.
