Liz Phair was born on April 17, 1967 in New Haven, Connecticut. Shes an indie pop rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. She has released five solo albums so far, received two Grammy nominations, and written songs featured in movies and commercials like Extraordinary which was on the soundtrack for Raising Helen and the theme for the NCAA Basketball Tournament in 2004. Her first album was the 18 track Exile in Guyville released on the Matador Label in 1993, a clever reference to how male dominated the 1990s alternative rock scene was and largely remains. Phairs provocative, unapologetic, intelligent lyrics, and relatable female empowered personae gained her enough industry respect that by her third album release, Whip-Smart 1996, she was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. The issue was about female rockers, with the cover pose of a crouching, barefooted, mousy haired Phair turning to face the camera, looking the approachable and ethereal aspect of the in your face indie sweetheart Rolling Stone would later tag her in their 2001 Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll. Phairs never achieved the actual proclamation of that issue, however, which used that photo to boldly announce A Rock Star is Born. However, two of Phairs albums have been certified Gold and she continues to evolve as an artist.
