Juliette Binoche was born on the 9th March 1964 in Paris, France. She is an Academy Award winning and Golden Globe nominated actress. The French call her, with affection, "La Binoche", Juliette is well known worldwide for her roles in popular, award-winning films such as The English Patient in 1996 and more recently Chocolat in 2000. Her mother is Polish, and her maternal grandparents were imprisoned at Auschwitz because they were intellectuals. Juliette began acting in amateur stage productions, and at 17 directed and starred in a student production of Exit the King. The next year, she studied acting at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts of Paris. She moved to London in 1992 to be in the productions, Wuthering Heights and Damage, both of which helped develop her international reputation. 1993, she appeared in Krzysztof Keislowski's Three Colors's: Blue to critical acclaim. The film landed Juliette a Cesar Award for Best Actress. Following this success, she took a short sabbatical during which she became mother of a son, Raphael. In 1996, Binoche appeared two films, the first was A couch in New York and it bombed, the second was The English Patient, a worldwide hit. It garnered nine Oscars, including Best Supporting Actress for Juliette.
