Jennifer Lopez is from the Bronx. She was born July 24, 1969 in the Bronx, New York and at the age of nineteen, she paid for her own singing and dance lessons. She began to study at a local college, but dropped out after just one semester to dance at night clubs in Manhattan. She was taking classes during this time, and working as a waitress. In 1990, she acted the part of a fly girl on the television series In Living Color. She earned parts in several rap videos and got her big break at the American Music Awards where she was a backup dancer for the New Kids on the Block in 1991. She was a backup dancer for Janet Jackson just a couple of years later and appeared in the 1993 music video, That?s the Way Love Goes. She was in a variety of television programs that didn?t last long before they were cancelled, then got her real start in acting with the film, My Family. She went on to become one of the top ten earning actresses in the U.S. with her movie, Shall We Dance bringing in over $170 million dollars world-wide. Lopez also has a successful recording career, having sold over 53 million records. Her other business ventures include a clothing line, a Cuban restaurant, perfume, and a television and production company. She was named in the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the Spanish version of People, 2007.
