Jennifer Beals, born December 19, 1963 in Chicago, Illinois, is best recognized for the character she plays in The “L” Word, Betty. Born to an Irish mother and an African American father, she has stunning good looks that have served her well in the film industry. Her father died when she was just ten years old and her mother was later remarried to Edward Cohen. While studying at Yale, the young Beals took a role in Flashdance. Two years later, still studying American Literature, she was chosen to star in The Bride. Her classmate at Yale, David Duchovny, suggested her for the role of Scully in the X-Files, but she was turned down in favor of Gillian Anderson. Once she graduated from university, Beals threw herself headlong into her work, taking on multiple films per year, beginning with La Partita and Split Decisions in 1988 and Sons and A Vampire’s Kiss in 1989. 1993 was a record year for her, with a total of four movies, including In the Soup, which brought her a great deal of fame. She did quadruple movies in 2000 and 2001, as well. Her other film credits include Turbulence 2: Fear of Flying, Feast of All Saints, 13 Moons, and Desolation Sound, among nearly 50 others. In 2004, she landed a role in The “L” Word as a lesbian, which she played for three seasons.
