Janet Jackson was born Janet Damita Jo Jackson on May 16, 1966 in Gary, Indiana. The youngest of ten children, she was still in diapers when her five older brothers formed the Jackson Five and began to perform in nightclubs. Her brothers were signed with Motown Records and proceeded to bring out 10 number one singles, one after the other, which paid for the entire family to move to a mansion in Encino. Janet originally dreamed of being a jockey, but her father wanted her to sing. She started doing impersonations of famous singers like Cher and Mae West and wowed audiences, in 1974. Two years later, the Jacksons were given their own, self-titled television show, becoming the first variety show to star African-Americans. After two years, the show ended, but Janet went on to appear in shows like Good Times and Fame. She basically followed her father’s wishes, continuing with the family music business and recording her first album, Janet Jackson when she was just fifteen. The album was not overly popular, but she went on to do another, non-successful one. Finally, she recorded Control and hit the big time. Since then, Jackson has become the second most successful female recording artist of all time. She has also appeared in movies such as Nutty Professor II: The Klumps.
