Pinkett Smith was born on September 18, 1971, in Baltimore, Maryland. Her maiden name is Jada Koren Pinkett. She grew up in Maryland where she studied theater at the Baltimore School for the Arts. There, she met Tupac Shakur, they remained friends until he was killed in 1996. She continued on to study at the North Carolina School of Arts, but dropped out after a year, impatient to start her acting career. Pinkett Smith got her start in acting on A Different World in 1991.
