Fairuza Balk was born Fairuza Alejandra Feldthouse on the 21st of May, 1974 in Point Reyes, California. Her mother is a belly dancer and a Flamenco dancer. Her father is a folk musician. Her name means turquoise, in reference to her eyes. Fairuza was raised on a commune ranch in San Francisco after her parents split up. She also lived in Vancouver and in London, where she went to acting and dancing schools. She gained a role in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever in 1983, and then went on to star in Return to Oz. In 1988 she moved to Paris, but was in Vancouver a year later to attend high school. She decided to go to Hollywood and finish school by correspondence, and eventually she was cast in the lead role in The Craft with Neve Campbell, Rachel True, and Robin Tunney. Fairuza has made a name for herself playing intriguing and tough characters. In 1998 she appeared with Edward Norton in American History X as a neo-Nazi. She has also been in The Waterboy, Family Guy, The Sopranos, A Year and a Day, and Humboldt Country. She also has her own band, and is known to be a pagan who helped provide realistic information for the set of The Craft. She also owned her own occult shop in California called Panpipes.
