Bjork was born Bjork Gu?mundsdottir on the 21st of November, 1965, in Reykjavik, Iceland. She began studying piano when she was eleven. One of her teachers sent a recording of her singing to the only radio station in Iceland. A record label heard the recording, and offered Bjork a recording contract. She released her debut album in 1977. She formed many bands throughout her teenage years. Eventually she settled down with The Sugarcubes, and their first single was a surprise hit in the UK. They got themselves a cult following in the UK and US. Their first album, Life’s Too Good, was released in 1988. In 1992, the band split amicably. Bjork moved to London and began her solo career. Debut was released in 1993 and it received many positive reviews. She has since released around eight albums. She has also acted occasionally throughout her career. She appeared in The Juniper Tree in 1990. She wrote and produced music for Dancer in the Dark in 1999, and Lars von Trier the director asked her to star in it. She refused, but he threatened to stop the project, and so she did the job. After a draining shoot, she swore off acting again, yet she received the Best Actress award at Cannes Film Festival in 2000.
