Barbara Hershey was born Barbara Lynn Herzstein on the 5th of February, 1948, in Hollywood , California. She has an Irish American mother and a Jewish American father. She debuted in 1965 in three episodes of Gidget. She was then cast in the series The Monroes in 1966, but she disliked it so that much that she wrote letters under a different name to the producers demanding that show be cancelled. Her film debut came in 1968 With Six You Get Eggroll. In 1969, she was cast in Heaven with a Gun with David Carradine. They became involved, spearheading Hollywood counterculture, and having a child named Free who changed his name to Tom when he was old enough. In 1972, Barbara landed the lead role in Boxcar Bertha. She gave the director, a then new Martin Scorsese, a copy of her favourite book The Last Temptation of Christ. Barbara found controversy in her career – notably by injecting collagen into her lips in the 1988 film Beaches. She most recently has appeared in Love Comes Lately, Childless, and Vacuuming the Cat. She is no longer in a relationship with Carradine. She married Stephen Douglas in 1992 and divorced him in 1993. She is now dating Naveen Andrews from Lost.
