Bai Ling was born on the 10th of October, 1970, in Chendu, China. Her surname Bai means white, and her given name Ling, means clever. Her father was a musician, and her mother was a dancer, actress, and teacher. Bai Ling passed the People’s Liberation Army’s exams and became an artist soldier in Linzhi, Tibet. She was discharged from the army three years later, and joined People’s Art Theatre of Chengdu. She performed in Yuein and Little Tiger as a young man, and gained the attention of director Teng Wenji. He gave her a debut film role in On the Beach in 1985. She moved to New York in 1991 to attend their film department, and became a citizen in 1999. She gained a role in the film The Crow in 1994. Her role in Red Corner in 1997 was her breakthrough English role. She posed nude in the 2005 June Playboy issue. She has most recently appeared in Lost as Achara the tattooist with predictive powers. Bai Ling has said that she is bisexual. Many of her stories of her early life have not been proven, and many believe that Bai Ling has made up much of her past in order to raise her own profile, including her time in the army and her NY film department appointment.
