Who is Ashanti?

Ashanti was born Ashanti Shequoyia Douglas on te 13th of October, 1980, in Glen Cove, New York. She has worked as a singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress. Both her parents are former singers. Ashanti’s mother is African American and Dominican. Her father is African American and Chinese. She went to Bernice Johnson Cultural Arts Centre. Ashanti appeared in the Disney film Polly in 1994. Her mother began sending out demo tapes when she was a teenager. By the time she was fourteen, a bidding war erupted between three labels, but nothing worked out. In 2001, she began appearing as a background vocalist and a featured artist. She released her debut single in 2002. It spent 10 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100. She released her debut album Ashanti in April 2002, and it debuted at number one. She gained controversy by winning the Soul Train Aretha Franklin Award for Entertainer of the Year in 2002. 2003 saw her release her second album with great success. Her third album came out in 2004. Ashanti will continue to make music, but she has also moved into acting with her debut in 2005, and a string of film roles since that time.
