Aaliyah Dana Haughton, known in the performing world as simply Aaliyah, was born on the 16th of January 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. Aaliyah, meaning highest, most exalted one in Arabic, grew up in Detroit and rose to fame when she appeared on Star Search in 1989. She later found fame as an R n B singer in the mid 1990s and was associated with Missy Elliott, Timbaland, and R. Kelly. Aaliyah was married to R. Kelly, but the marriage was annulled, as she was only 15 at the time. Kelly was in his mid 20s. Aaliyah had several number one R n B songs, worked as a clothing line model, and starred in two films. It was at 6:45pm on the 25th of August 2001 that Aaliyah lost her life in a plane crash at Abaco Island in the Bahamas. The plane carried too much weight and it crashed into the marsh at the end of the runway. Seven other passengers and the pilot all died in the accident. Aaliyah had several unfinished projects at the time (including the Matrix films and Queen of the Damned). She was also slated to play Honey in the hit film of the same name (Jessica Alba took the role). She has been the only female artist to have a posthumous number one hit.
